After listening to my son, Josh, playing the piano I sat down at the piano and just improvised and came up with the repetitive pattern that opens this piece. We were both impressed and I did not want to let the idea go so memorized and built on the patterned phrase. The rippling rhythm came by playing triplets with the right hand and duplets with the left.
The gradual build ups in this piece sound effortless but it was very hard work to get it right and I almost gave up when it sounded a complete mess. Such were the dynamics that the original master distorted on the loud explosion near the end. I’m glad I persisted!
